National Cinemas: 1968

3RD Cinema: films from underdeveloped countries that explore social, political, and cultural isues. They are often compared to Soviet films of the 1920's in theme. They give an identity to a culture. The goal is often to educate an audience that may be ignorant of governmental or social issues. These are not made for the bigscreen, so they can be screened in remote regions.

Oberhausen Manifesto: call for the new German film. Das neue Kino, combining folk elements with social values. Herzog- religious and mystical, redid mureau's nosferatu. poetic visual imagery. the main Herzog character is driven by destiny or an inner drive.

Wenders-most realist. docs and feature films. more concerned with the subjective side of events. theme is America and American movies.

Fassbinder-grossly realistic. most prolific, some 40 feature films, tv and radio also, writing staging theatre. roots in the theatre like bergman. working middle class. or hard and shiny world of rich or detached elegance of the world of the near or distant past. power is central theme.

2-second era out of Europe involves personal, real and truthful films

3-rejects cinema as personal expression, Director becomes part of the collective, appeals to the masses and presents truth.

3 categories of 3rd Cinema films

1-well supported national cinema, the film can rival others

2-several distribute internationally

3-the films can becomes acts of underground activity and sedition.
